Why I Created Unwritten by Design

Cara McNulty, founder of Unwritten by Design

I am a woman who has been surrounded and supported by extraordinary women throughout my life.

And when I look back, I realize how much that has mattered.

My life, like most lives, has not followed a straight line.

I lost a parent when I was young. I have gone through a divorce. I experienced postpartum anxiety. I have raised children while building a demanding career. I have lived through periods of enormous work stress. I have lost a job. I have been passed over for opportunities I thought I had earned. I have gotten jobs I never imagined I would get. I have had to decide when to stay, when to leave, when to push harder, and when to change direction. And eventually, I became a CEO.

Some of those transitions I chose. Some I absolutely did not.

Some were exhilarating. Some were painful. Some shook my confidence and my sense of who I was. Others opened possibilities I could not yet see.

But there is one thing they have had in common.

I did not navigate them alone.

At every stage of my life, there have been women around me.

Women who listened. Women who challenged me. Women who told me the truth. Women who made a call or opened a door. Women who had been through something before me and shared what they learned. Women who helped me see something in myself that I could not see at the time. And women who simply stood beside me when there was nothing to fix.

They are my Sphere.

And I know that my life would look very different without them.

That realization is at the heart of Unwritten by Design.

For more than three decades, my work has centered on a question that also sits at the heart of Unwritten: what actually helps people change? My career across behavioral health, health care, well being, and leadership has focused on translating behavioral science into real world change.

Unwritten brings that professional experience together with something equally important: what I have learned from navigating my own life transitions surrounded by extraordinary women.

But I have also lived enough life to know that science and strategy are only part of the answer.

People matter. Connection matters. Support matters. Who surrounds us matters.

Unwritten by Design brings those things together.

We create immersive experiences grounded in the science of behavior change, connection, and social support, but powered by the wisdom and experiences of the women in the room.

No one is there to tell another woman what her life should look like.

Instead, we create the space, structure, tools, and Sphere that allow women to ask better questions, challenge assumptions, imagine possibilities, make intentional choices, and begin designing what comes next.

Because I believe something very simple:

Transitions are inevitable. How we move through them can change everything.

And none of us should have to do it alone.

The Unwritten Sphere

Unwritten by Design was never intended to be built by one woman.

Just as none of us moves through life alone, Unwritten is being shaped by a Sphere of extraordinary women who bring different experiences, generations, perspectives, and paths.

They are leaders, thinkers, creators, mothers, daughters, friends, mentors, entrepreneurs, executives, caregivers, advocates, and women who have navigated transitions of their own.

Some have spent their lives studying human behavior, connection, leadership, health, or well-being. Others bring the wisdom that comes from living through change, making difficult choices, taking risks, starting over, and creating something new.

They are women who have seen the bottom and the top, and who are here to share what they have learned, lift the women beside them, and remind us of something we too often forget: that women supporting women is more powerful than any of us give it credit.

Together, they help challenge our thinking, shape our immersions, open possibilities, and ensure that Unwritten continues to be informed by both science and lived experience.

They are the Sphere around Unwritten.

And, over time, that Sphere will continue to grow.
